Even with all the other options last Saturday night, things were like a can of sardines at Mangia Italiano by midnight.

Perhaps this was a sign of good things to come again for this venue (if so, I hope they’re able to come through on the rumored “smoking area/patio”; it was really congested – and smelly – out front).

If – like me – you haven’t been down that way for a while, be very “head’s up” while driving; all manner of changes have occurred to traffic lanes and parking (including the conversion of Hartford east of Grand to a two-way street, which I discovered when someone turned onto it and headed straight at me as I drove west right down the middle!).

—–

As mentioned last issue, the show above included the last performance by Theodore with drummer Jason

Torbitzky. The talented Sam Meyer (Magic City) is slotted as his replacement (and actually played their Off Broadway show earlier in the week). Frontman Justin Kinkel-Schuster made comments twice during their set alluding that the band was no more, but he apparently meant as we had known them.

—–

A reggae show at Firebird this Friday will be headlined by Tribal Seeds, while Seedless is one of the support acts.

Which theory will prevail?  Will mayhem ensue?  Can’t we all just get along?

This weekend is busy – almost as hectic as the last one:

FRI 08/05

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart / Craft Spells
Off Broadway   3509 Lemp   8-11   $12 adv/14 dos (+2 under 21)   Smoke-free
http://www.offbroadwaystl.com

NYC’s TPoBPaH are a critically-acclaimed indie-pop band that is frequently compared to the “showgaze” bands of a few years back.

There’s a profile of them in the new RFT, but somehow it isn’t available on the web version.

CS hail from Stockton, GA – didn’t have time to preview them.

As a bonus, the “Guerilla Street Food” truck will be on-site – I don’t know anything about their offerings.

Tory Z Starbuck Project / The Child Forgives and Creates / Key Grip / Albert Kou
Lemmons   5800 Gravois   9-1   $5   Smoke-free

There’s no telling what you’ll get at a TZSP show, but you can bet it’ll be intriguing.

TCFaC are a sextet from Chicago who play elaborate compositions of the “sonic soundscape” ilk.

All I could find on KG was one song – a hip-hop/rock thing.  Meh.

I couldn’t find anything on AK.

—–

Things will be of the “multi-media” ilk tonight at El Lenador (3124 Cherokee); Atlanta’s silly hillbillies Chickens & Pigs and a noisy, messy mix of blues, country and rock sounds from De Los Muertos provide the live music portion, while a screening of “Rust Never Sleeps” – a documentary of the 1978 Neil Young tour – will round out the evening (I can’t tell you the sequence of events).

Starts around 9, with a $5 cover. Kitchen will be open.  Smoke-free.

—–

The pop-tinged trio rock of Pelvic Girdles can be heard as the opening act of a triple-bill at The Crack Fox (1114 Olive), starting about 9:30.

The other two bands don’t appeal to me, but you can catch PG for a fiver.  Smoking allowed.

SAT 08/06

Troubadour Dali / The Blind Eyes / Ocean Rivals / Secret Colours
Off Broadway   3509 Lemp   8-12:30   $10 (+2 under 21)   Smoke-free
http://www.offbroadwaystl.com

Albums are being popped out like fall babies after a bitter winter; this time, the “release” show is for TD, a psych-influenced pop-rock band that I’ve never really warmed to (possibly due in part to the haughty “rock star” attitudes/egos a couple of the members seem to possess).

Christian Schaeffer reviews the album as the week’s “Homespun” column in the RFT:

Tuneful, soul-tinged pop-rock from the down-to-earth TBE (who also have a fine new-ish album to peddle).

I was really impressed by my initial encounter with OR; a very “Man Who Sold the World”-era Bowie sound, married to a ‘90s alt-rock vibe.  I’m looking forward to my next one, so I can learn if it was one of those “honeymoon” impressions that happen sometimes.

Chicago’s SC play groovy, psych-soaked rock – they remind me of too long-absent The Black Hollies.  Break out the Nehru jacket and purple shades.

He Loves Her, Madly / Magic City / Pat Sajak Assassins
Schlafly Tap Room   2100 Locust   9-12   Free   Smoke-free
http://www.schlafly.com/events/

HLH,M is an act I haven’t seen – the tracks I’ve heard were slightly prog-ish instrumentals.

MC return to the stage with their powerful and somber rock after a recent up-and-down period – the success of their “release” show at El Lenador was promptly followed by the theft of the “band van” (which belonged to keyboardist Adam Hesed).

PSA play complex tunes offering a blend of prog and hard rock sounds.

—–

Wormwood County - an unheard-by-me band from Spain that includes Lindy Worachek (saw player in the defunct Bad Folk) plays at El Lenador, with support from (a pared-down, I’m guessing, as some regular members are in Magic CityPeck of Dirt

Starts around 9.  I don’t know the cover, but $5 is a good bet.

—–

For a different vibe, catch the vintage swing-jazz sounds of Swing DeVille at Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest), running 9-12.  Free and smoke-free.

—–

For a different different vibe, try the mix of punk, country and rockabilly sounds offered by Nashville’s Jason and the Punknecks and Butcher Holler at Ten Mile House (9423 Gravois).  Starts after 10, with a $5 cover.  Smoking may still be allowed – they stopped their full menu and went to a pizza-only one.

A couple of pretty active nights before the weekend:

WED 02/09

The Godfathers / Warm Jets USA / Frosting

Off Broadway   3509 Lemp   9-12   $12 adv/15 dos (+3 under 21)   Smoke-free

http://www.offbroadwaystl.com

England’s TG hail from a period – the mid-‘80s to mid-90’s – when I wasn’t paying a lot of attention to the new music scene, so they escaped my notice.  They reformed a few years back, and are kicking off a US tour here tonight.

Their songs, to me, seems like a mid-point of The Ruts and Stranglers; driving, punk-ish  rock with a hard-nosed lyrical attitude (although they do get a bit pop-ish on occaision).

Muscular, LOUD, all-out trio rock from the Jason Hutto-fronted WJUSA.

F is a Chicago band that’s tough to describe; the songs I heard on the web ranged from tough guitar-laden rock, through psych-pop, to an exquisite ballad rendering of Lindsey Buckingham’s “Go Insane”.  The songs did have a common bond – all were very pleasing.

Mike Applestein of the RFT engages TG frontman Peter Coyne in a Q&A:

Tonight’s “Stag Nite” at El Lenador (3124 Cherokee) will feature Racketbox, along with some yet-to-be-determined guests.

Starts between 9 and 10, with a $5 cover.  Smoke-free.  Stag cans for $1.

THU 02/10

Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials / Chris Thomas King / Brown Bottle Fever

The Gramophone   4243 Manchester   8-11   $10 adv/ 15 dos (+3 18-20)   Smoke-free

http://thegramophonelive.com

Genuine Chicago slide-guitar blues from LEatBI.

CTK is a young New Orleans bluesman who sometimes plays it straight, while expanding the genre’ with hip-hop and house touches.

BBF is a very busy trio that plays blues and blues-rock.

Patrick Sweany / Cassie Morgan & The Lonely Pine / Benjamin Riley

Off Broadway   3509 Lemp   9-12   $10 (+3 under 21)   Smoke-free

http://www.offbroadwaystl.com

Nashville’s PS blends blues, folk and rock into a sound that’s similar to what Bob Reuter goes for in some of his mellower songs.

CM&TLP are her and Beth Bombara, playing mellow folk.

BR is a co-hort of David Beeman (Old Lights) – they play in each others’ groups - who delivers powerful, passionate vocals over bluesy, soulful folk-rock sounds with a “sacred music” vibe.

The Rocketz / Johnny Saint / Atomic Betty / Evan Mitchell One Man Band

Firebird   2706 Olive   9-1   $10 (18+)   Smoke-free

http://www.firebirdstl.com

A revved-up blend of punk and rockabilly styles from LA’s TR.

JS and AB will likely sound likewise.

Belleville’s EMOMB is unheard by me.

—–

This venue’s start time policies are frustrating – there’s no consistency relative to the number of acts or whether a show is on a weekday or weekend (a two-act bill on Friday  starts at 9; while Saturday offers another four-act bill – but starts at 7:30).

I wouldn’t anticipate TR going on until after – probably well after – 11.  That’s too bad – I guess only the “cool kids” (people who don’t have to wake up before 8AM) get to experience them.

Between this wordy edition and the one being prepared for “Twangfest”, I’m really pressed for time – let’s get right to it:

FRI 06/04

The Educated Guess / Makeshift Gentlemen / Don’t Mess With Winkie
Off Broadway 3509 Lemp 9-1 $5 (+3 under 21) Smoke-free

http://www.offbroadwaystl.com

YHS is thoroughly befuddled by this show.

It’s billed as “The Cotton & Steel Epic – a Civil War Rematch” and features TEG – a fine orch-pop group prone to ambitious undertakings – billed as The Educated Rebels, with MG – a glossy synth-pop/punk outfit – going by The Makeshift Yankees.

I don’t know if this show will feature special songs, or costumes – or anything singular beyond the names and the concept – nothing on the groups’ websites elaborates.

While I could have seen this as a kind of “pop war” idea, the presence of DMWW – a band that plays ska-punk – as Don’t Mess with Bobby (Robert E.?) Lee kinda throws a curve into that theory.

All things considered, it’s only $5 – worth a (powder rifle) shot.

The Mother Hips
Old Rock House 1200 S. 7th 9-12 $10 Smoking – moderate

http://www.oldrockhouse.com

I just learned about TMH – considering that they’ve been around for about 20 years, that’s a serious oversight. The CA quartet is somewhat akin to Sloan (another band I learned about way too late) but their pop is more Topanga Canyon rootsier, as if the Halifax boys followed their storied countryman Neil Young’s journey to the coast.

No opener is listed – maybe that means they’ll be playing long enough that their sweet, Crazy Horse-esque cover of “Cowgirl in the Sand” (how appropriate!) will be in the mix.

SAT 06/05

The Riverfront Times annual “Music Showcase” – featuring nominees for the annual “RFT Music Awards” – occurs today, moving from Sunday (much better for folks with regular jobs), and physically relocating from the U.City Loop to the “Loft District” on Washington (better – hopefully – for finding a parking spot), with everything occuring from just E of 10th to just W of 14th.

It’s a great way to sample a lot of local talent for little – or no – money; free outdoor music running 1 to 7, and indoor shows from 6 to 2 for a mere $5 all-access wristband.

I hope to use this opportunity to expand my horizons, rather than just seeing groups I’ve already heard. That being said, there are a lot of untried acts that run up against some “tried ‘n trues” I’m not gonna miss; a set by faves Old Lights, the return of Grace Basement after a quiet period, and a late, last set by The Incurables before they go on a recording hiatus (providing I can last that long).

As for logistics:
- there’s a Cards game at 3:15 – keep in mind when coming into downtown, as traffic may be an issue. I don’t see that inhibiting parking W of Tucker/N of Olive – too far away.
- some (all?) of the venues allow smoking, so be prepared for it. Plugs may be smart for some of the hard-rock indoor acts.
- be sure to get to a venue with lead time if it’s someone you really want to see; some places may fill up – and have to turn folks away.

Here’s a link to the lineup:

http://microapp.riverfronttimes.com/musicshowcase/2010/schedule.php

And one with capsule summaries of all nominees – playing or not:

There are other options for the less ambitious tonight:

Swing Deville
Schlafly Bottleworks 7260 Southwest 9-12 Free Smoke-free (if indoors)

http://www.schlafly.com

Fans of the kind of jazz that artists like Django Rinehardt and Stephane Grappelli gave us will dig SDV – swingin’ sounds from players with serious “chops”.

Pretty Little Empire / Peck of Dirt / Kill a Drifter
Schlafly Tap Room 2100 Locust 9-12 Free Smoke-free

http://www.schlafly.com

PLE (also playing the showcase at 6) are a band that I haven’t heard. PoD perform rock with a folk bent that veers from quiet strumming to a stunning “wall of sound”, often within one song. KaD play what they call “Murdergrass” – didn’t get a chance to check ‘em out.

If you’d heard that the Dexter Romweber Duo was playing at Firebird tonight – not so.  Illness forced a cancellation.

I don’t know if their music is any good, but a band named Ethyl &The Regulars score points for that alone…

Tenement Ruth are acclimating a new bassist and will be offline for a while, although members will be active in other projects.

This is the “farewell show” for TH, who actually haven’t been very active for some time.  The sound is a country/rock/folk blend that’s in the “No Depression” vein.
I haven’t been able to determine if BC is playing solo/with The True Liars/with The Domino Kings, but you can count on classic country sounds in any instance.
The Hot Seats / Pokey LaFarge

http://www.offbroadwaystl.com
THS come from VA to regale us with a wide array of traditional acoustic music styles, featuring originals with witty or silly lyrics.  PL is a self-described throwback to the type of blues-styled troubador that wandered the country in the ’20s and ’30s.

Here’s the lowdown on BOB from Christian Schaeffer in the RFT:
Some times JB rocks, other times he folks, and occaisionally he gets his cabaret on.  Smartly-crafted rock with a pop attitude from GB, whose album “Gunmetal Gray” ranks high on a list of several strong local releases in 2009.
The venue is in the student union building set back from the NE corner of Grand and Laclede.  Parking is available on the SW corner and is usually free.
The Safes / The 75s / Rusty Nail
A-B’s Place 5627 Manchester   9-1   $? Smoking - moderate to heavy
Chicago’s TS play hook-filled pop-rock with a punk attitude.  T7 play punky, minimalist pop that’s very catchy – and very fun.  RN provide Pogues-esque folk-punk.
Bunnygrunt
Mangia Italiano
3145 S. Grand   11-1:30   Free Smoking – heavy
http://dineatmangia.com
Frenetic, punky pop from B.
I expect that someone else will also be on the bill, as they aren’t normally inclined to play for more them 40 minutes or so.

Let’s get right down to business:
FRI 02/12
Swing Set
Stone Spiral Coffeehouse 2500 Sutton   7-9 $? Smoking status unknown
Classic swing jazz - with a few twists thrown in – from SS.
I haven’t visited this Maplewood venue yet – guessing there isn’t any booze.
Maid*Rite / Two-Man Gentlemen Band
Schlafly Tap Room 2100 Locust   9-12   Free Smoke-free

Always a good time to be had with the ladies of M*R, who play “jug-band”-style folk with lyrics that’ll have you grinning.  T-MGB hail from Long Island and play Django-era swing.
Langhorne Slim / April Smith & The Great Picture Show / John Henry & The Engine
Off Broadway 3509 Lemp   9-1   $10(+3 under 21)   Smoke-free

LS is a charismatic singer/songwriter who blends folk, soul and rock sounds.
More on him from the RFT and Roy Kasten:
AS&TGPS hail from Brooklyn and play folky pop with a bit of a cabaret-singer vibe to it.  JH&TE have a nice late-70s/early-80s “bar band” vibe to them; rootsy, bluesy rock.
The Monads / Cutthroat Shamrock / Dave Hause
The Fox Hole at Atomic Cowboy 4140 Manchester   9-1   $? Smoke-free
Manically-paced “punkgrass” sounds from TM.  CS hail from TN and are similarly inclined, but with a Celtic twist.  DH usually fronts Philly punk group The Loved Ones – didn’t have time to research his solo stuff.
SAT 02/13
Trigger 5
The Fox Hole at Atomic Cowboy 4140 Manchester   8-12   $? Smoke-free
Classic country stylings from T5, with players and singers who know their stuff.

RS play top-notch songs ranging from quiet country to mid-tempo rock.  You really should hear ‘em if you haven’t – and you can do so for free tonight.
Miss Jubilee and The Humdingers / Los Carnales
Casa Loma Ballroom 3354 Iowa   8:30-12   $10 Smoking status unknown
Here’s a good scenario for folks that want to “cut a rug” – and a nice evening out for you and your Valentine.
MJatH are a poppin’ swing outfit that includes Rob Guth (Scott Kay and The Continentals) and Kevin O’Conner (7 Shot Screamers), with the latter swapping his skins for a sax.  The venue website says it’s gonna be a night of swing, but LC is a blues band – ???
Puerto Muerto / Peck of Dirt / Leadville
Schlafly Tap Room 2100 Locust   9-12   Free Smoke-free

Ex-pats (now residing in Chicago) PM are pretty off-beat – and really not that appealing to me – but I’ve never seen ‘em live, and I like the support groups.
Another Roy Kasten perspective:
PoD is a vehicle for the songs of Sherman E. Sherman, and features a stage very, very full of talented players culled from a bevy of local acts.  Rock with a folk-ish cast that veers from quiet strumming to a stunning “wall of sound”, often within one song.  L play gritty, twangy rock featuring the tasty twin guitar work of Tom Buescher and Larry Bulawsky.
Theodore / Rats and People Motion Picture Orchestra / Andrew Bryant
Off Broadway 3509 Lemp   9-1   $10 (+3 under 21)   Smoke-free
http://www.offbroadwaystl.com
This will be an “album release” show for T, who play songs chock full o’ pain and loss in a variety of rootsy styles ranging from quiet to full-throttle.  They grabbed the main RFT “Music” article this week – authored by Christian Schaeffer:
RaPMPO usually perform an original soundtrack to a film – don’t see anything about what (if anything) they’re screening this time.  Didn’t get to research AB.
Feb 11
Less talk – more pop:
THU 02/11

FS is a highly respected – at least among pop cognoscenti - artist who was named “songwriter of the year” by Rolling Stone in 1994.  His exquisitely-crafted pop-rock is in the spirit of Marshall Crenshaw, Nick Lowe and their ilk – I wish he was touring full-band instead of solo…
A “Q&A” with him from Roy Kasten and the RFT:
B,MA hail from Chicago (crazy kids!) and normally play dreamy, electric pop-ish rock, but tonight’s set will be acoustic.
Please note the early start.

The Riverfront Times “Best of St. Louis” hit the stands Wednesday, and DC feels like a proud (grand?) papa, with numerous “AAfFT” endorsed/approved winners in the “Music” category.
Check out all the categories/winners at:

The “Taste of St. Louis” festival runs Friday-Sunday at Market & Tucker downtown.
I saw a preview on the local news Wednesday, and the organizers apparently had an epiphany (maybe the economy kicked ‘em someplace sensitive) and there will actually be smaller “sample” portions available for less money this year.  What a crazy thing to do at a “taste of” festival – not expect people to buy near-or-actual restaurant-sized portions sold for at-or-above regular restaurant prices!
Unfortunately, it appears that the music budget has been scaled back considerably (no “Southern Comfort” connection this year), and the “headline” acts are sub-”Rib America” grade – the Sunday headliner is a Sublime tribute band, fer cryin’ out loud!  There are some good local acts, but none that you can’t witness on a regular basis.
Here’s the info if you’re curious:

Also - the “Historic Shaw Art Fair“ occurs this weekend on the 2 blocks of Flora Place just east of Tower Grove.  It’s a nice-sized event that I’ve always found enjoyable (if the weather’s pleasant – looks to be).  There is some music happening – though it’s not a focus.
There is a $5 admission fee.  More info at:
There isn’t the usual glut of shows that appeal to me this weekend:
FRI 10/02
Tonight’s options include a “Big Muddy Records” showcase party starting at 8 on the rooftop of the Jefferson Underground Gallery building at 2400 Jefferson (across the street and just N of the Way Out Club).  A bunch of their acts will be playing – 7 Shot Screamers, The Monads, Hooten Hallers, Alley Ghost, Pokey Lafarge and Doormat.
Admission is $10, and it’s a BYOD affair.  Please note that it’s a four-floor building, and I’m unsure if there’s an elevator.  It may get chilly up there – dress accordingly.

I’ve only heard a few SW songs – they were in the “chamber-pop” style, to my ears – and none by SL or PO’B, but what’ll it cost ‘ya to check ‘em out?  Nada – except you may have to pay to park in the SLU garage on the SW corner of Laclede and Grand (the building housing the venue is on the NW corner).
* I recall something in the works to make the entire SLU campus smoke-free – don’t know if it happened, but puffers should be prepared for a serious “jones”, if so.  Grab the Nicorette!

Speaking of Tupelo, MG play rootsy guitar rock that’s in the same spirit as Uncle T.  They also suffer from “Jethro Tull Syndrome”; the affliction that occurs when a band’s name is incorrectly assumed to be that of a member.  This, of course, dictates that you ask one of them “Which one of you is…”, should you attend.
TD3 are a kindred gritty roots-rock group who put on a energetic show.  I haven’t heard TC.
